Founded in 2004 by American visual artist and environmentalist Ann Wizer, XSProject was created to help the hundreds of thousands of Indonesians below the poverty line who make their living from the global economy of waste. Ann began by buying non-recyclable waste from trash pickers. She designed and made new products like purses, bags and wallets, in the process creating new income opportunities for the very poor.
XSProject is a social enterprise that seeks both financial and social returns. Profits are generated through the creation and sale of its unique products. XSProject’s social mission is focused on trash pickers and their families.
In addition to the increased revenue that XSProject provides trash pickers when it purchases raw materials from them, the organization also supports the education of the trash pickers' children. Normally working alongside their parents by the time they are 8 years old, these children do not often have the opportunity for an education. XSProject currently contributes 5% of its revenue to a fund that purchases school uniforms, books, and other essential items that the children need to go to school. Through its work, XSProject provides these young people with hope for a better life – away from the trash heaps.
