All the cardmakers have lost both parents either to the 1994 genocide or because of diseases like AIDS and malaria; they all support at least one younger sibling. None were able to finish school, and they are now young adults with few job prospects. At Cards from Africa, they are able to earn over five times what they would otherwise, and they are thus able to provide food, shelter, healthcare, and education for their siblings and families.
